Which Internal Drive is The Right Choice for You: SATA or EIDE?
SATA Interface
Serial ATA (SATA) hard drives are quickly becoming the new standard in hard drive technology. Motherboard manufacturers now include SATA inputs on their boards. SATA hard drives result in less clutter and increased airflow in the computer system, because SATA cables are 400 percent narrower than EIDE cables. Some older computer system motherboards don't have SATA ports, but a PCI SATA controller card can be installed to add support for SATA drives. If you don't know whether your computer has SATA ports on the motherboard, refer to your computer or motherboard documentation or contact the motherboard manufacturer.
EIDE Interface
Enhanced integrated drive electronics (EIDE), also called Parallel ATA (PATA), hard drives have been the standard in the home computer industry for more than 10 years. Some newer computer system motherboards don't have EIDE ports, but a PCI EIDE controller card can be installed to add support for EIDE drives. If you don't know whether your computer has EIDE ports on the motherboard, refer to your computer or motherboard documentation or contact the motherboard manufacturer.

    Enclosure Install Guide

Installation of your HDD to the removable tray unit:

    Includes daisy chain setup.

Tools required:  Philips head screw driver, anti-static wrist strap, anti-static mat.

Carefully unpack the bay unit from the packaging
Unpacking your new equipment for operation.
Carefully unpack the bay unit from its packaging; failure to do so may result in damage to your new equipment. Tipping the box on its side is help full in removing the equipment.
Quad bay with removable tray and keys in the tray locks
Quad Bay enclosure with removable trays and keys for locking and unlocking the tray position.
Remove the removable tray from its bay by turning its corresponding lock key to the unlock position, carefully lift the tray handle and slide the HDD tray out from the bay. This disconnects the tray’s IDE and power receptacles from the bay unit.

Note: The tray key locks are shipped by default in the unlocked position. Turning the key to the right will lock the removable tray in it corresponding bay. DO NOT lift the tray handle without verifying the key is in the unlock position.

Figure C: Slide the cover back on to finish the HDD assembly.

Installing the HDD into the enclosure tray. Holding the tray with the handle facing you, slide the top cover of the tray towards the back of the unit fully exposing the inner connections for power and IDE (notice the open and directional arrow on the cover). Remembering ESD (Electro Static Discharge) precautions, the use of grounding strap and ground mat is recommended. Remove your HDD from its anti-static bag.

Setting your jumpers on the HDD:

NOTE: Western Digital hard drive specific Master single or Master with slave configurations are available on your HDD, select the appropriate configuration by positioning the jumpers on the proper jumper pins using your hard drives jumper schematic.

Connect the HDD power to the power plug in the removable tray. Connect the IDE receptacle from the tray into the HDD by sliding the HDD flatly against the bottom of the tray into the IDE connector (do not try to angle the HDD into the IDE connector of the removable tray as it could bend and damage the IDE connector pins on the HDD). Use the mounting screws included to secure the HDD to the tray by turning the tray over and assembling the screws to the HDD mounting holes with the Philips head screw driver.

Note: DO NOT use the cable select configuration option on the hard drive when installing it into the removable tray.

Placing the removable tray back into the bay
Replace the removable tray into the bay enclosure.
Once the HDD has been secured and all connections are verified, replace the tray cover by sliding it back onto the tray rail along the sides of the enclosure, gently push the cover over the locking pins towards the handle, this secures the cover to the tray. Your tray is now ready for its operation in the bay unit. Slide the tray gently into the bay receptacle, once the tray has been positioned back into the bay, lower the tray handle and turn the lock key back to the locking position.

    "Daisy Chaining" your equipment

The image to the left shows a typical daisy chain configuration between multiple bay Firewire 400 enclosures or singularly and to a PC. Notice the A,B,C,D positions on the multi-bay enclosures. A to B connections are on the same multi-bay enclosure but connected to separate 2 port control boards within the bay. The configuration is flexible in that either of the ports on either control cards can be used as long as the connections stay separate. In other words, DO NOT connect the daisy chain cable into the same card ports.

Cable C to D (running between the two bays) in the image on the left can go to either a PC or another single or multiple bay enclosure. The cable is connected at one end to one of the available ports on the multi-bay enclosure and runs to the available port on next piece of equipment.
